If a QB throws the ball out of bounds “throwing the ball away” from their own end zone, is that intentional grounding (where a safety would be awarded to the other team) or just an incomplete pass? – George A.
If the QB is in the pocket and in imminent danger of being sacked and he throws the ball away to avoid the sack and there is no eligible receiver in the area, it would be intentional grounding and a safety if the penalty is accepted. There is a judgment factor regarding whether there was an eligible receiver who had an opportunity to catch the pass but in most cases it would warrant a flag.
