Thanks for your continued excellent work via twitter and this blog. I normally do not respond but many of the LTE’s that I have seen just drive me a little crazy!
This was a frustrating season for the fans, and I cannot imagine what it was like in the Timex Performance Center! After winning two SB in 5 years, defeating the Pat’s twice, arguably one of the best team of the century so far(how it irks me to say that), what I am reading about a total overhaul just seems so irrational! The core of this team built around Eli, Cruz, Nicks and yes some of the defensive players is solid and one that will compete for the next 5 years.
Every team goes through a transitional period, and this is no different. We all have questioned KG until we are blue in the face, but let it go fans, he is not going anywhere and if you analyze his stats and production you will see his is among the most efficient offenses in the league. If we trashed KG, it would take at least a year for a new offense to be in place successfully(unless you are Peyton).
League rules around cap, scheduling and the playoff system is built for parity. Going 9-7 is what gets you to the edge of the playoffs. Teams are forced to spend wisely and sometimes you run the risk of losing players. The concept of building a dynasty does not exist in the current NFL. The goal is to compete to get to the playoffs, which this team has done consistently in my opinion.
As far as the job done by Jerry Reese and company, predicting things like injuries, ability to adjust to the pro game and evaluating a draft class are best left to experts. Reese & his team have done a great job in restocking positions like WR, TE, DB with players like Bennett, Hixon, Randle, Brown, Will Hill and Prince. It normally takes 2-3 years to determine a players worth coming out of college.
This organization is among the best run, stable and supportive of any team in the league. Look at the mess in Philly, Dallas, Cle and the Jets. How many GM’s hit it right every year with every pick? A team is lucky in my opinion if they get two contributors from each draft class.
Where we have missed the boat is at LB and OL. The one criticism I have of this team is that they are too conservative when it comes to players like Wilson and Randle, as well as some of the young LB’s. It seems to me that the philosophy of this team is that OL tend to be value picks and we look to rounds 2-4 for those guys that we can plug in and develop over time.
I am pretty happy with this team, no playoffs are a downer, but the only team I can safely say that makes the playoffs every year are the Pats and Packers. Most of the other teams are in a fight to get that spot. I have two championship banners in my basement showing the success of this organization! I relish in it and look forward to next year with excitement.
I have been a fan since the mid-sixties and have seen it all. Sorry the length of this LTE, but too much is yet to be done to project this team as a total rebuild as many are predicting.
Outstanding letter Anthony. We need more voices of reason such as yours.
