The New York Giants are potentially facing their Week 2 game against the Detroit Lions without starting middle linebacker B.J. Goodson.
Goodson was added to the team’s practice report Saturday as questionable, listed with a leg issue. Although Goodson will probably test out his injury before the inactive list has to be submitted, the Giants will reportedly protect themselves and elevate Curtis Grant, who was with the team in the summer, from the practice squad as depth.
The potential loss of Goodson, who was on the field for all the snaps last week for the defense, is a big one. To compensate, veteran J.T. Thomas, who played middle linebacker in Jacksonville before signing with the Giants as a free agent, will probably get the start in the middle for the Giants base defense. In coverage, the Giants could go to a three-safety set.
The Giants will have to clear a roster spot for Grant when the move becomes official at 4 p.m. ET.
