As expected, starting quarterback Eli Manning will not play in the Giants’ preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced.
Josh Johnson, who with Geno Smith is competing for the No. 2 quarterback job, will get the start in Manning’s place.
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are two other healthy scratches for the Giants. Rome Okwara will get the start at left defensive end for Pierre-Paul while presumably, Donte Deayon will handle the slot cornerback duties.
The Giants’ injury-related scratches include receivers Tavarres King (ankle), Sterling Shepard (ankle), and Kevin Snead (hamstring); safety Ryan Murphy (unknown); linebackers Keenan Robinson (concussion) and Mark Herzlich (stinger); and defensive tackle Robert Thomas (lower body soreness).
In a surprise move, receiver Odell Beckham Jr. seems set to play this week. How much he plays–if he does indeed play– remains to be seen.
