In a curious twist, the New York Giants will reportedly host free agent offensive tackle Branden Albert later this week, according to a NFL Network report.
The 32-year-old Albert, who recently paid a visit to Seattle, has been on the market since being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in August.
It’s unclear as to why, with five losses in the record book, the Giants might be looking to shore up their offensive line now after throwing full organizational support behind youngsters Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart.
One possible theory could be that Hart, who returned to the starting lineup after missing a couple of games with an injured ankle, is still not right physically and the Giants, who moved left guard Justin Pugh to Hart’s right tackle spot, would prefer to leave Pugh at left guard.
The Giants could also be doing due diligence just in case they need a short-term solution down the road, but whatever the reason, the timing is certainly odd given the organization’s insistence that Flowers and Hart had improved over the offseason.
